Arrival is a sci-fi drama that demonstrates just how little humans are afraid of what they do not understand. In this case: aliens. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the movie follows Louise Banks (Amy Adams), a linguistics professor who is given the task of deciphering an alien language. In an interview, Villeneuve said that he chose cinematographer Bradford Young because he wanted someone who had “a very precise sensibility towards natural light.” The effect was evident in all elements of the movie in scenes such as the dark exterior ambiances and scientists wrapped up in protective suits. Despite Arrival's slow pace, the eerie atmosphere made for a thrilling movie experience.
